What is traction alopecia?

Traction alopecia is hair loss from constant pulling. Tight braids, weaves, high buns, sleek ponytails and tightly twisted locs all add tension.

It starts as breakage along the hairline. Then the hair thins. Over time the pulling can damage the follicle and the hair stops growing in that spot.

Can traction alopecia grow back?

Early traction alopecia often improves once the tension stops. Once follicles are damaged, the loss can become permanent. That is why early care matters.

Not sure what it is? Show us.

Tilt your head toward a window, take a photo of the spot that worries you and send it on WhatsApp. A trichologist looks at it and tells you what to do next. No queue, no guessing.

What is CCCA?

CCCA stands for Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia. It is seen mostly in women of African descent. It starts at the crown and spreads outward. Follicles are destroyed and replaced with scar tissue.

It was first described in 1968 as hot comb alopecia. Later it was also seen in women who never used hot combs. Relaxers, dyes, chemicals and chronic traction were then studied as factors. Its exact cause is still being researched.

Early signs of CCCA

  • Itching or dryness at the crown
  • Tenderness, redness or an inflamed scalp
  • Thinning that starts at the centre and spreads outward

If you notice these signs, see a trichologist promptly. Early detection gives a better chance to stop it and keep your hair.

Protecting your hair

  • Have colour and chemical services done by a professional.
  • Keep a real moisturising routine.
  • Avoid styles that are tight and constant.
  • Do not ignore itching or soreness at the crown.

Frequently asked questions

Do locs cause hair loss?

No. The locking process itself does not thin hair. Thinning comes from breakage, tension, inflammation or genetics.

How do I tell traction alopecia from genetic thinning?

Traction alopecia shows where styling pulls, often the hairline. Genetic thinning follows a pattern at the crown, temples or front hairline. A trichologist can confirm which one you have.

Can a hair transplant fix CCCA?

Not while the condition is active. A transplant into active scarring hair loss fails. The first step is to stop the condition.

Would recommend them any day. They are such a friendly community, very warm and kind when it comes to their service delivery and do not get me started on the results! They do deliver on what they say and I am absolutely grateful for their support in growing my hair back to what it is today! They did make my dream come true, and finally I can get to embrace who I am fully when I look at myself in the mirror. Thank you so much Hair Hub!

I thank God that after 2 gruesome years of scalp psoriasis, I have finally found a solution that works like magic. This was only possible with the services I got from Hair Hub at Bemuda Plaza, after years of spending so much money on other hair products on the market, all in vain. The first consultation I had was with Celestine Gitau and 3 weeks later I can say without a doubt that I no longer have any flaking or itching of the scalp and the inflammation has since reduced drastically.
