What causes dandruff?
Dandruff is also called pityriasis capitis (its scientific name). Research links it closely to an overgrowth of Malassezia globosa, a yeast that lives naturally on the scalp.
Is it dandruff or something else?
Many people call every flake dandruff. But flaking can also come from other causes.
- A dry scalp from harsh products or over washing
- Contact dermatitis from relaxers, dyes, shampoos, waxes, glues or synthetic extensions
- Low zinc and other nutritional gaps
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis
- Tight braids, cornrows and weaves that stress the scalp
