PRP is one of the state of the art, non-surgical, totally natural alternative medical procedure used at Hairhub Trichology Centre for treatment of hair loss or hair thinning in both men and women.

The function of platelets is to promote healing and aid in the clotting of blood at the site of the wound. The injection of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a technique using body’s own blood to heal itself. Hairhub incorporates its use for the growth of thinning hair and in stimulating inactive or newly implanted hair follicle into an active growth phase. PRP contains approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood.

The process is one that involves drawing 40-80 mls of your  blood ,as though you are having a routine blood testing at your primary care physicians office , it’s then placed into a centrifuge ,which spins it and separates out the different components. The platelets are specifically isolated and then injected into the areas of thinning using thin needles in a stand-alone procedure. Specific nerve blocks may be applied to ease the discomfort associated with it. Once the PRP is injected in the areas of damaged follicles it amplifies the body’s naturally occurring cell regeneration mechanism to enhance hair growth.

The decision to use PRP is personal and is made after careful consideration and consultation with one of our Trichologists. It’s mainly prescribed for those patients are experiencing hair loss/thinning but their follicles are still in place. How a patient responds to the procedure can vary from person to person, and will depend on the intrinsic healing ability of one’s own body. Individuals receiving PRP exhibit improvement after about 2-3 months and the therapy are repeated every month for about 4-6 months depending on the level of response. For our transplant patients PRP therapy is commenced 3 weeks post-operatively.

The following medical conditions are a contra-indication to PRP therapy and thorough screening is done before the prescription is arrived at;

  • Platelet dysfunction syndrome.
  • Thrombocytopenia.
  • Sepsis.
  • Acute or chronic infections.
  • Chronic liver disease.
  • Anticoagulation therapy.
  • Chronic skin disease/cancer.
  • Metabolic systemic disorder.

Though no FDA approval on use of PRP has been made yet, remarkable results has been recorded with more than 90% success rate witnessed at Hairhub Trichology centre.

Whether you are looking for addition hair stimulation, thicker density or are looking to have hair transplant with addition of PRP, Hairhub Trichology Centre is able to meet your needs.

Hair is venerated, cherished, and desired in societies throughout the world. Both women and men express their individual identities through their hairstyles. Healthy hair contributes to successful social assimilation, employment, and overall quality of life. Therefore, hair loss can have detrimental effects on almost every aspect of a person’s life.

Camouflage options for patients who suffer from hair loss include:-

  • full or partial wigs
  • hair extensions
  • concealing powders and sprays
  • Scalp micro pigmentation

Full or partial wigs.

A wig is a head covering made from human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fiber. A wig may be used as a less intrusive and less expensive alternative to medical therapies for restoring hair. People wear wigs to disguise baldness. The price of the wig is proportional to its quality and wig quality determines how long the wig will be expected to last before a replacement is needed.

Hair extensions.

Hair extensions are strands or collections of synthetic or human hair products that are glued, braided, twisted, sewn, clipped, or fused onto existing hair fibers. In contrast to wigs, hair extensions require attachment to an individual’s existing natural hair. Hair extensions have successfully been used to reduce the appearance of hair loss.

Concealing powders and sprays.

These are camouflaging sprays / powders that are used to cover thinning areas, balding areas, thicken hair, and to add texture. These products are applied to towel-dried, blow-dried, or completely dried hair. The hair is first styled and then the spray or powder is applied 4-6 inches above the area to be thickened. These products are removed from hair with shampooing. Disadvantages of these products include the need for daily application and the fact that water activities may distort the product.

Scalp micro pigmentation

Scalp Micro pigmentation is a medical grade tattoo technique where tattoo pigments are placed on the scalp in a stippling pattern to look like a shaved head of hair. When done properly, an observer can’t tell the difference between a shaved head and a tattooed head.

A tattoo instrument and carefully selected inks are used. Thousands of very tiny dots are placed in the scalp at the base of a hair and between the hairs. When administered by a trained and licensed specialist, the Scalp Micro pigmentation treatment can restore receded hairlines, thicken remaining hair, camouflage transplant scarring, and create the look of close-cropped hair. One of the greatest things about the innovative scalp micro pigmentation treatment is that it requires little to no continued maintenance and carries no strict lifestyle or daily restrictions.

This can last the lifetime of the patient however, many do fade over time requiring touch-ups. Most patients do not return for touch-ups but some do want to address the fading that occurs over time may return at 5, 10 or more years later.

Patients who had scalp micro pigmentation are told to avoid being directly in the sun, and if they do, use a high SPF skin blocker or hat. It is always best to use a hat for extended sun exposure. If there is frequent sun exposure without being protected, the colour of the tattoo will fade and require more touch-up treatments every few years.

Evaluation of hair loss is done through extensive consultation with our trichologists. We value time with the client and aim at making so much out of our 30-45 min consultation while still ensuring that our clients are comfortable and at ease to talk about their hair. We schedule our clients for consultation on appointment basis so that every client is given ample consultation time. Through the trichologists’ expertise knowledge and approach, the client is assured of a definite diagnosis, prognosis as well as the most suitable therapy management. Consultation involves several stages some of which depend on the specific clients concerns and requirements.

History taking. Hair and scalp conditions happen over a period of time from one day to many years. At Hair Hub every client’s hair loss history is taken with great precision and utmost keenness, allowing for ample time to elicit the clients concerns in every consultation. Our trichologists listen to every hair loss journey, deducing key symptom markers to aid in diagnosis and management.

Physical evaluation. At hair hub, every consultation encompass a physical evaluation of the hair and the scalp, a process referred to as trichoscopy. The hair is magnified under a trichoscope, allowing for easy visualisation of singular hair strands and a close view of the scalp.

Investigation. However hair loss and scalp conditions at times go beyond the scalp surface and the hair strands and affect the follicles buried in the dermis. When this occurs, the trichologist discusses biopsy with the client. A biopsy involves taking a few follicles from the affected areas of the scalp, and sending them for histopathological analysis.

Diagnosis. The process of consultation concludes with a definite and accurate diagnosis of every client. Here at Hair Hub we believe that every individual is unique in every way and should be involved in the entire diagnostic process. Our trichologists therefore engage each client in discussion at every stage of consultation, addressing their concerns, allying their fears, managing their expectations as well as providing necessary information on the diagnosis narrowed down to, management of the condition and the expected prognosis.

Confidentiality. Just like hair loss is a process so is hair restoration something our clients are sensitized about during consultation. More so, Hair Hub ensures that our clients’ history, investigations and diagnosis is kept confidential, safe and available for perusal throughout the hair restoration process.

Follow up. A consultation at Hair Hub marks the beginning of the journey towards hair restoration, which we walk hand in hand with the client. Constant follow up calls and reminders are part of our follow-up program after the initial consultation.

Many have enjoyed our unique, warm approach and satisfactory consultation that have seen them restore their lost confidence through proper diagnosis, treatment and psychological support as well.

Low-Level Laser Light (LLLT)

Low-Level Laser Light is one of the most effective therapies to treat hair loss. Currently, over-the-counter laser therapy devices for hair growth are available through convenient hands-free systems, or less convenient hand-held devices. Either product may be used at home, and does not require the supervision of a physician.

LLLT Defined

The laser light used in promoting hair growth is defined as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). LLLT is sometimes included under a broader definition of ‘Phototherapy’ called Low-Level Light Therapy, where the light-emitting device may be a laser and/or light-emitting diode (LED).

LLLT at Work

It is theorized that when the laser light is absorbed by target tissue molecules, the energy level of the molecules is increased and the molecules respond by ‘working off’ the excess energy with adaptive changes. These changes may be chemical or physical, and they may have biological effects on the target tissue or surrounding tissues.

Treatment of Androgenetic Hair Loss

It is hypothesized that LLLT initiates the chemical reaction in the cells that make up the follicle’s epithelial matrix causing the proliferative activity.

Much evidence points out that follicular apoptosis (programmed cell death) is reversed via the application of laser energy. Observations of wavelength stimulation of optimal hair growth, has shown precisely what wavelengths, power, and intensity are necessary for optimal effect in stimulating new hair growth.

It is important to note that heat is not associated with the photochemical and photo therapeutic effects of LLLT. LLLT is a low wattage ‘cold light’ laser, and while there are visible red wavelengths, there is no sensation on the skin of persons undergoing treatment. Cold lasers are safe and universally accepted as such by medical authorities, worldwide. Also significant is the fact that there are no side-effects associated with the use of LLLT, as there are with usage of pharmaceuticals, topicals and pills.

Who May Benefit from LLLT?

Medical experts who specialize in treating hair loss agree that treatment should be based on the correct diagnosis of its cause.

Hair loss physicians and medical experts agree that LLLT is a highly viable option for growing hair in those afflicted with androgenetic alopecia-inherited/genetic pattern hair loss. It is not intended to treat hair loss due to other factors.

In treating androgenetic alopecia with LLLT, physicians have found that LLLT is most effective in persons with minimal to moderate hair loss. Individual responses to LLLT differ, and results do vary from person to person.

Is LLLT Effective in Hair Restoration?

The vast majority of physicians and medical experts agree that LLLT can be effective in growing hair in those with genetic pattern hair loss. Experts have also observed and noted that the overall health and condition of hair may be improved in a LLLT treated area.

PRP is an exciting non-surgical therapeutic option for patients who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions.

Recent scientific research and technology provides the medical community with new understandings of wound and tissue healing. As a result of these scientific studies, we know PRP is an all-natural medical procedure for hair loss or conditions causing hair thinning.

Human blood contains mesenchymal stem cells and autologous blood products that contain essential and specific growth factors that assist in tissue regeneration and healing. PRP therapy has established itself to be effective as a medical treatment modality in the specialty fields of oral surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and cosmetic surgery, sports medicine and orthopedics. It has been used extensively in these specialties for the last two decades with generally positive outcomes and success. In the field of hair restoration, existing evidence demonstrates PRP therapy as a promising treatment option to promote hair growth.

Blood is drawn in our office as though you are having routine blood testing at your primary care physician’s office. The blood is spun in a centrifuge and the PRP is separated and removed from the rest of the blood.

PRP contains special cells called Platelets, that can cause growth of the hair follicles by theoretically stimulating the stem cells located in the Dermal Papilla as well as other structures of the hair follicle These special Platelet cells promotes healing, accelerates the rate and degree of tissue healing and regeneration, response of the body to injury, and formation of new cellular growth. The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive or newly implanted hair follicles into an active growth phase.

While individual results vary and no guarantees of success can be made, preliminary studies indicate many patients respond to PRP therapy. Some hair restoration physicians apply PRP to the scalp for those patients who are not surgical candidates every three (3) to four (4) months. Other protocols will use PRP before or during surgery to insure graft survivability.

PRP is an emerging non surgical based therapy for natural stimulation for thinning hair. Larger clinical studies are pending but the current medical literature contains numerous positive results. Although a few controlled studies exist, anecdotal and case reports are the primary sources reflecting success with PRP therapy.

Patients with history of heavy smoking, drug and alcohol use. Medical diagnosies such as platelet dysfunction syndromes, thrombocytopenias, hypofibrinogenaemia, hemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute and chronic Infections, chronic liver disease, anti-coagulation therapy, chronic skin diseases or cancer, metabolic and systemic disorders.

PRP has been used successfully in other medical and surgical disciplines for many years. The decision to use PRP is a personal decision and should be made after careful research, consideration and consultation with a physician. PRP is safe and natural because the procedure concentrates the good cells from your own body directly back into the area where it is needed. There is absolutely no chance of getting a blood infection from another human being. PRP involves using your own cells and it will not be rejected by your immune system.

Absolutely. In fact, we encourage it and prescribe PRP therapy as a compliment to a nonsurgical approach for those patients who are not eligible for surgery or who want to delay hair restoration surgery. As a non-surgical treatment option, we recommend PRP therapy along with Minoxidil and DHT blockers or for those patients who can not tolerate or have side effects with these medications.

In summary, PRP therapy offers a promising alternative for natural hair growth for those patients who are not candidates for surgery. It also is a beneficial therapy for surgical patients who want PRP therapy as a complimentary procedure at the same time hair restoration surgery with either automated FUE.

Whether you are looking for additional hair stimulation, or are looking to have hair surgery with the addition of PRP, Hair Hub is able to meet your needs. Although results will vary from patient to patients, PRP as a non-surgical option offers patients with miniaturization and hair thinning improvement in hair caliber and thickness.

Muli Musyoka Hair Raising Conf 3

Venue: Hilton Hotel Nairobi

The Nairobi Hair Raising Conference was the first event of its kind to happen in Kenya having its debut on the 12th July 2016. This was once the most informative conferences that stylists have ever been exposed to. We had delegates from Uganda, Rwanda, Eldoret as well as different counties in Kenya.

The conference’s main agenda was to enlighten hairdressers on how to notice different forms of hair loss and when to know a case needs to be referred to hair loss experts. It was also a launch for an insurance product from AIG that is directly tailored for the salon owners/stylists to protect them from salon accidents as well professional suites.

“This event saw the world renown Trichologist and the president to the Globals International Association of Trichologists, David Salinger IAT from Australia lecture on Hair loss. Muli Musyoka IAT the first ever trichologists and the brains behind Hair hub Trichology Centre lectured on entrepreneurship. Dr. Keith Dindi IACSAM, MBchB,Mmed the first doctor to successfully perform FUE hair transplant in Sub-Saharan Africa lectured on Hair transplant and the use of growth factors to regrow hair.”

Unlike other events, this conference was purely designed to benefit the stylists and not to push any product. If you missed this event then you will have yourself to blame. However, all is not lost, Hair hub will continue to support the industry with such events in order to contribute to the growth of the hair industry in the region.

In short words

We provide state of the art solutions to hair and scalp problems by offering professional services focused on patient’s satisfaction.
